Exercise May Help Alleviate Low Back Pain Symptoms

08.17.11  |   Alternative Treatment, Health & Fitness, Pain Management  |  admin

According to health experts, exercise is one of the most effective treatments for low back pain, report news sources.

Second only to headaches, back pain is one of the most common neurological conditions in the U.S. An estimated $50 billion is spent every year on low back pain. A study out of McGill University in Montreal found altered blood flow patterns in people with chronic back pain, leading researchers to conclude that chronic back pain could affect brain function.

According to the National Institute of Health, exercise is one of most successful remedies for low back pain. One personal trainer suggested a regimen that made sure to control the lower back while at the same time stabilizing the abdominal area, adding that decreased flexibility, diminished core strength, and a sedentary lifestyle can make low back pain symptoms worse.

The personal trainer cautioned against engaging in exercises that could aggravate low back pain symptoms like toe-touches, full sit-ups, and any exercise that requires the back to arch.

It is always best to consult a medical doctor before starting or changing an exercise program. Because back pain often has a neurological component to it, consulting with medical specialists like neurologists may result in additional treatment options for the relief of low back pain.
