Muscular Therapy for Healing the Most Common Injuries From Car Accidents

08.27.11  |   Medical Treatment, Pain Management, Personal Injury  |  admin

The most common injury from a car accident is whiplash injury to the neck, or cervical sprain/strain. Sprains and strains are often called “soft tissue” injuries; soft tissue includes muscles, tendons, and ligaments, but one can think of it as muscle. Soft tissue injuries, which are invisible on x-rays and often overlooked, can cause severe, debilitating pain after a car accident.

If a soft tissue injury is not directly addressed with therapy and left untreated, the injured muscles and other soft tissues can cause chronic pain—for months, years, and even decades after the accident. Unfortunately, the standard medical approach to these injuries often involves simply suppressing the symptoms with painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs. This method leaves the injured muscles to hopefully heal on their own; they may not recover fully. When injured muscles heal with scar tissue they remain weaker, less elastic, and prone to re-injury and pain. Neck pain doctors use muscular therapy approaches like Soft Tissue Release to help restore muscular strength, flexibility, and normal function by correcting or “aligning” the scar tissue; this can be crucial for full muscular recovery. However, if these symptoms persist, it may be a sign of a more serious problem that may require the aid of a Los Angeles neurologist.
