Physical Therapy May Help Low Back Pain in Pregnancy
Low back pain during pregnancy may be caused by misalignment of the joint where the spine meets the pelvis and that physical therapy is one way of addressing the issue, report news sources.
Women often experience back pain during or after pregnancy, and in many cases the culprit is dysfunction of the sacroiliac joint—the point where the sacrum (several fused bones toward at the base of the spine) join the ilium (the large bone of the pelvis). Typically, patients with SI joint dysfunction are women between ages 20 and 40 who have had children. Falls and injuries can also lead to SI joint dysfunction.
Physical therapy can help treat SI joint dysfunction once the physical therapist has completed an examination of the low back and pelvis. Treatment will often include a combination of hands-on soft tissue work to help reduce and exercises specifically targeting the SI joint all with the aim of reducing pain and inflammation, promoting healing and flexibility, and realigning the SI joint.
