Physical Therapy Shown to Improve Neck Pain

09.12.11  |   Medical Research, Medical Treatment, Pain Management  |  admin

Physical therapy may be one of the best ways to address and treat neck problems, report news sources.

Fifty-four percent of Americans will experience neck pain at some point in their lives. Common neck problem symptoms include pain and stiffness, shoulder pain, headaches, jaw pain, arm pain or weakness, dizziness, numbness and tingling, visual changes and fatigue.

Research has shown that physical therapy may be one of the best ways to treat problems. A 2009 study published in the European Spine Journal found that, by itself, cervical traction (a device that gently pulls on the neck) lowered the neck problem symptoms by 44 percent. When combined with exercise, researchers found that there was an up to 78 percent resolution of symptoms.

A study published in the journal Spine found that medical costs and work days lost decreased in study participants receiving mobilization/manual therapy and exercise therapy. The participants also showed decreased pain in improved function.
