Study: Yoga Helps Relieve Disability of Back Pain Patients
A new UK study has found that yoga helps sufferers of chronic back pain function better in daily life despite pain levels staying the same, report news sources.
The study followed 313 adults who had been suffering with chronic or recurring back pain for an average of 10 years. The participants were divided into two groups: The first group attended a yoga class once a week for 12 weeks and were encouraged to practice on their own at home; the other group was given no other intervention but a back pain information booklet.
The people in the yoga group showed improvement in the ability to complete day-to-day tasks, whereas the booklet group showed no change in back pain disability. Both groups reported no significant change in their levels of back pain.
The study appears in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.
