Tori Spelling Migraine Underscores Role of Hormone Changes

11.01.11  |   Headache, Medical Treatment, Pain Management  |  admin

The news of Tori Spelling being rushed to the hospital because of a “horrendous migraine” weeks after giving birth to her third child underscores the role of hormone fluctuations in migraine attacks, says a migraine advocacy group.

Up until puberty, the occurrence of migraine is about the same for boys and girls; however with the onset of menstruation, migraine patients become predominately women. Seventy percent of migraine sufferers are women, and the majority of the attacks suffered are tied to hormonal changes.

Some women experience their first migraine after the birth of a child. Treatment of migraine during the post-parted period can be complicated if the woman is breast-feeding. While some migraine medications are safe to use while breast-feeding, it is best for the woman to consult both with her doctor and a pediatrician. As a general rule, while taking migraine medication, it is best to discard any saved milk after 48 hours.

Migraine is one of the many conditions a headache doctor at the Neurological Associates of West Los Angeles may be able to help you or a loved one with. When it comes to treating migraine the longer you wait the worse your condition can get. That’s why we encourage anyone suffering from migraine or headaches to call a Los Angeles headache doctor right away so that you or a loved one can be on the road to recovery as soon as possible.
